Coaching for Farmers and Farm Families
For the last 23 years I have been working with farmers and farm families in some of the most vulnerable situations. We have had to discuss foreclosure, bankruptcy, land sales and business liquidation.
I have had to sit with farm families as they face a terminal illness and bankruptcy caused by health challenges.
Farmers often say to me, I don’t think anyone has had this happen, because they have felt alone, isolated, and drowning in shame and regret. Farmers function in a culture where they are expected to be tough, strong, hard working and resilient. Modern farming is also very isolating, and farmers lack community and connection. The relationships they once relied on – their banker, grain elevator manager, local machinery dealer, and neighbor down the road, it’s all gone.
Farmers carry the stress, pressure and uncertainty in silence, and that silence can be deafening to the farmer.
The stress and pressure often spills over into all areas and it’s not uncommon to see divorce, health challenges, and a series of bad decisions because the farmer just couldn’t think straight with financial pressures.

How do you know it’s time to reach out?
The biggest hurdle in finding a solution is that most often farmers wait too long before they reach out and ask for help. You know it’s time to reach out when:
- Financial pressure and cash flow shortfalls have you making irrational decisions
- Big decision are being made from a short term vs a long term perspective
- Family dynamics shift – fights with spouse, children, extended family as financial pressures and shame has you in fight or flight
- You know your mental health and physical health is taking a toll. Unhealthy thoughts, numbing with alcohol, and deterioration of your health
- You pull away from community, social outings, and connecting with family
